Is Formaldehyde a VOC?

VOC stands for Volatile Organic Compounds, a general term for organic chemicals that have a high vapor pressure and are volatile at room temperature and pressure.
VOCs are widely available, both indoors and outdoors. They are hazardous substances, and their volatility can cause significant harm to humans and the environment. Short-term exposure may cause eye, nose, and throat irritation, headaches, and dizziness. Long-term exposure to high concentrations of VOCs may damage the liver, kidneys, and nervous system. Some substances are listed as carcinogens. So, does the formaldehyde we often talk about belong to the VOC category?
Formaldehyde is a gas with a strong pungent odor. It is also highly volatile and water-soluble. Therefore, if it can be released into the air at room temperature, it is typically more prevalent and active in newly renovated homes. Materials like wood and paint used in renovations, as well as new furniture like sofas and mattresses, all release formaldehyde.
This shows that formaldehyde is volatile (easily volatile at room temperature) and an organic compound (chemical formula: HCHO), fully meeting the basic characteristics of VOCs. Therefore, formaldehyde is also a type of VOC. Due to its particularly prominent and widespread harmful effects, formaldehyde is often listed alongside "TVOCs" (total volatile organic compounds).
